Four Croatian football supporters, who were accused of causing a disturbance on a Ryanair flight at Dublin Airport, have been acquitted after their trial collapsed. Marco Bajzec, Zvonimir Prkacin, Luis Buic, and Tomislav Zajec were arrested on January 22nd as they were trying to fly to London for a football match. They were charged with offensive behavior on the aircraft but pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.
During the non-jury hearing at Dublin District Court, evidence was presented by a cabin crew member who stated that the men boarded normally. However, just before take-off, one of them stood up to use the toilet, causing a delay in the flight. The captain was informed about the situation, and despite several warnings, the men were eventually allowed to use the facilities. When their friends also requested to use the toilet, one of them made a threatening remark, leading to the decision to remove them from the plane.
Despite legal submissions from the defense regarding the lack of disclosure of the prosecution witness's statement, Judge Susan Fay refused to dismiss the charges. She acknowledged the oversight but ultimately struck out the case. The men had been arrested at Dublin Airport and charged under the Air Navigation and Transport Act. While some of them expressed remorse for the disruption caused, others maintained their innocence.
