Alexander Dighton is sentenced to life with a minimum of 22 years for attacking a police station.

Alexander Dighton, who was already on the radar of counter-terrorism police in Wales, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 22 years for his attack on a police station.

Prior to the incident, Dighton had been interviewed by officers a year earlier. In January 2024, he was referred to Prevent, a counter extremism programme, by his sister. Officers conducted a three-week detailed assessment of Dighton, during which it was noted that he was considered vulnerable due to his history of going missing and attempting suicide.

Nicholas Hearn, the prosecutor, revealed that Dighton's sister had raised concerns about his anti-immigration, anti-Islam, and racist views, leading to his referral to the police. Despite the assessment, Dighton was not deemed to meet the criteria for inclusion in the Prevent programme.

Det Supt Andrew Williams of Counter Terrorism Policing Wales stated that there was no indication from the initial assessment that Dighton would later carry out such an attack. He expressed confidence in the assessment conducted by the officers and supported their decisions.

When asked about Dighton's current status in terms of radicalization and threat level, Det Supt Williams confirmed that he was satisfied that Dighton had been de-radicalized and did not pose a threat.
