Pakistani films released during Eid Al-Adha attracted the highest box office collections in five years, according to the sales and marketing head of the country's largest cinema chain. 'Love Guru,' a romantic comedy starring Humayun Saeed and Mahira Khan, collected Rs 12.8 crores [$457,143] in the first three days of Eid, making it the biggest Eid weekend opener ever in Pakistan. Another film, 'Deemak,' a horror movie, also performed well at the box office. International collections for 'Love Guru' reached Rs15.4 crores [$546,000] over the opening weekend.
Despite speculations about the authenticity of the figures, film critic Kamran Jawaid dismissed claims of fabricated box office collections. He highlighted the high footfall in cinemas across the country as evidence of the audience's interest in Pakistani movies. Jawaid also provided a breakdown of the numbers based on the seating capacity of Pakistani cinemas, emphasizing the legitimacy of the quoted figures.
The films performed exceptionally well at cinemas in Packages Mall in Lahore and Jinnah Park in Rawalpindi. Late-night shows were running daily, with advanced bookings indicating packed theaters for the upcoming weekend. The success of 'Love Guru' and 'Deemak' has sparked optimism for the future of Pakistani cinema, with industry experts suggesting the need for more high-quality films to sustain audience interest.
