The Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has announced plans to provide job opportunities for affected Jetstar Asia employees, including positions for approximately 100 pilots and 200 cabin crew members.
An SIA spokesperson stated that the group has been collaborating with Jetstar Asia since Wednesday to identify employment options for those impacted by the airline's upcoming closure.
Over 500 individuals in Singapore will be laid off when the airline ceases operations on July 31.
Representatives from SIA and Scoot will be present at Jetstar Asia's office from June 17 to June 19 to engage with interested employees and discuss available roles.
The spokesperson mentioned, "We are creating various opportunities within our airlines, including roles for about 100 pilots and 200 cabin crew members. Our goal is to assist as many affected staff members as possible in pursuing their careers in the aviation industry."
"We recognize the uncertainty during this period and are dedicated to providing the necessary support to ensure a seamless recruitment and onboarding process," the spokesperson added.
The SIA Group values the expertise of Jetstar Asia employees and anticipates welcoming successful candidates.
Jetstar Asia, the Singapore-based budget airline under Australia's Qantas, will cease operations on July 31 due to escalating supplier costs, higher airport fees, and increased competition among low-cost carriers.
Employees at Jetstar Asia expressed surprise at the closure, praising the company for the support received thus far, including severance packages and assistance in securing new employment.
Each of the retrenched staff members will receive four weeks' salary for every year of service, a bonus payment for the financial year 2025, a special thank you payment, and continued access to staff travel benefits based on their tenure.
Labor chief Ng Chee Meng revealed that the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and the Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) are assisting affected employees with job placement and career guidance, particularly in the aviation and aerospace industries.
The NTUC and its Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) will be available at Changi Airport Terminal 1 next week to offer services such as career coaching, skills enhancement, and employability support.
