The latest case brings WA’s total for the year to 20 after an outbreak in March sparked at least 17 cases.

Perth Airport has issued a warning to travellers and visitors last week to be vigilant for symptoms of measles following the confirmation of a case in an overseas traveller.

The infected individual was on Qantas flight QF10 from London to Perth, which landed at Perth International Airport on June 6. Passengers who passed through terminals T3 and T4 within two hours of the flight's arrival are advised to monitor for symptoms.

Additionally, passengers on domestic flight QF938 to Brisbane, departing from Perth and arriving in Queensland, may have also been exposed to the virus.

Dr. Rebecca Hogan, acting director of Communicable Diseases, reassured that the terminals pose no further risk but urged those on the affected flights or in the area at the time to watch for symptoms.

Measles symptoms include fever, fatigue, runny nose, red eyes, cough, and a red rash that typically appears a few days later. It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to show after exposure.

This recent case brings the total number of measles cases in Western Australia to 20 for the year, with 17 cases stemming from an outbreak in March. This figure is significantly higher than the six cases reported in the state last year.

Individuals who are not fully vaccinated against measles are at risk of contracting the virus, which can be life-threatening if left untreated. Those unsure of their vaccination status or planning overseas travel should consult their GP regarding vaccinations.

If there are concerns about potential measles infection, individuals are advised to seek medical attention and contact healthdirect on 1800 022 222.
