An alliance of business organizations, foreign chambers, and civil society groups is urging the Senate to take action on the impeachment case of Vice President Sara Duterte, increasing pressure from the private sector to fulfill its constitutional duty.
The Justice Reform Initiative (JRI), which advocates for the rule of law and an independent judiciary, emphasized that everyone, regardless of power, must adhere to the Constitution.
JRI noted that while the impeachment case against Duterte could be risky for her political future, it also presents an opportunity to prove her innocence.
Following her impeachment by the House of Representatives in February on various charges, JRI stated that any attempt by the Senate to avoid, postpone, or dismiss the trial is not only irregular but also unconstitutional.
The business group stressed that in an impeachment trial, there are only two possible outcomes: acquittal or conviction, with no room for delay or deferral.
Amid criticism of the Senate's decision to return the articles of impeachment to the House, JRI called on senators to uphold their duty to the public and the Constitution, urging them to prioritize the rule of law over political loyalties.
According to JRI, public officials are accountable to the people, and demanding answers from them is necessary to ensure transparency and uphold the principles of governance.
The group urged lawmakers to rise above partisan interests, demonstrate patriotism, and honor their allegiance to the Constitution in handling the impeachment case.
Notable members of JRI include the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX), and the Makati Business Club (MBC), all of which have issued statements supporting the impeachment proceedings.
