A number of Wexford councillors have taken issue with a recent visit by the Moroccan Ambassador to the county which was facilitated by Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy, feeling they were snubbed over not receiving an invite.

Several Wexford councillors have expressed their displeasure with a recent visit by the Moroccan Ambassador to the county, organized by Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy, as they felt excluded from the event.

During the June meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD), it was implied that Deputy Murphy had welcomed Lahcen Mahraoui, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, to New Ross on June 3. Surprisingly, none of the New Ross councillors, including the cathaoirleach of the district, were extended an invitation.

Cllr Michael Sheehan raised the issue at the district meeting, emphasizing the importance of following protocol when dignitaries visit. He stated that it is customary for dignitaries to be recognized by the cathaoirleach or a representative of the cathaoirleach, and that local representatives should have been present to acknowledge the Ambassador's visit.

Cllr John Dwyer supported Cllr Sheehan's sentiments, highlighting the significance of upholding protocol during official visits. He stressed the historical importance of the position of cathaoirleach and expressed his disappointment at being excluded from such events.

Cllr Bridín Murphy, the current cathaoirleach of the NRMD, did not hold back in expressing her disappointment at being left out of the Ambassador's visit. She emphasized the disrespect shown towards the position of cathaoirleach and hoped for better treatment in the future.

Both Cllr Sheehan and Cllr Dwyer emphasized the traditional role of the cathaoirleach as the 'first citizen' of the district, highlighting the need to respect this position during official visits and events.

Overall, the exclusion of local councillors from the Ambassador's visit has sparked discontent among Wexford representatives, who feel that their roles and the significance of the cathaoirleach have been overlooked.
