US Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles, where they made their first detention of a civilian, marking a rare use of military force to support domestic police. This comes ahead of national protests over President Donald Trump's military parade in Washington.

The detained man is a US Army veteran and an immigrant who obtained US citizenship. These events have appealed to Trump supporters but outraged other Americans who are expressing discontent in the streets.

President Trump ordered the Marines to Los Angeles in response to street protests over immigration raids, despite objections from California's governor. He claims that troops are necessary to quell the protests, a contention disputed by state and local officials.

Today, about 1,800 protests are scheduled across the US in opposition to the Washington military parade that coincides with Mr. Trump's 79th birthday. This military parade and the domestic use of active-duty troops are uncommon for the United States, as was the military detention of a US citizen on US soil.

Democratic opponents are starting to push back against these actions. Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles expects fifteen protests in the city and urges people to remain peaceful. She, along with other elected officials, opposes the raids and military presence, questioning the extent to which the federal government can seize power from the state and local jurisdictions.

About 200 Marines have been assigned to protect the Wilshire Federal Building in Los Angeles, part of a battalion of 700 Marines supporting the National Guard. The Marines and National Guard are tasked with protecting federal property and personnel, and they may temporarily detain individuals, but they must hand them over to civilian law enforcement for any formal arrest.

Reuters witnessed Marines detaining a person at the Wilshire Federal Building, and images showed the individual being restrained with zip ties before being handed over to civilians from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This marks the first known detention by active-duty troops on US soil.

Los Angeles has seen ongoing protests for eight consecutive days, sparked by immigration raids. While most demonstrators have been peaceful, a small percentage have engaged in criminal activities such as assaulting police officers, looting, or damaging property. Law enforcement officials welcome peaceful protests but warn of consequences for those who cause harm or damage.

Mayor Bass has implemented a curfew in parts of downtown Los Angeles to maintain order. There is no set end date for the curfew, but officials hope to lift it once the cause of the turmoil, the immigration raids, ceases.
