Thai and Cambodian officials met on Saturday (Jun 14) in an effort to defuse the tensions, which flared following a brief skirmish on May 28 that left a Cambodian soldier dead.

Thai and Cambodian officials held a meeting on Saturday (Jun 14) to address escalating tensions resulting from a recent skirmish that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. The territorial dispute between the two countries has led to military mobilization along the 820km shared border, which includes contested ancient temples.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed hope for a peaceful resolution through the meeting, as her government faces challenges in maintaining popularity amidst economic struggles. Despite pledges for dialogue, both nations have resorted to threats such as border closure and cutting off essential supplies.

Phnom Penh has retaliated by announcing a halt in purchasing Thai electricity, internet services, and products, along with banning Thai films from local television. The situation remains tense, with no immediate resolution expected from the ongoing Joint Boundary Commission meeting in Phnom Penh.

Cambodia is inclined towards seeking intervention from the International Court of Justice to settle jurisdiction over disputed areas, while Thailand prefers a bilateral approach to the issue.
