High-level committee led by Union Home Secretary to investigate Air India crash in Ahmedabad and recommend prevention guidelines.

A multi-disciplinary committee led by the Union Home Secretary has been established to analyze the factors behind the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad and to propose preventive measures for the future.

The Civil Aviation Ministry clarified that this committee will not replace other ongoing investigations by relevant authorities.

The primary focus of the panel will be to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to prevent and manage similar incidents moving forward. The Ministry has announced that the committee will release its findings within three months.

On June 12, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft bound for London Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport, resulting in the tragic deaths of 241 passengers on board and numerous individuals on the ground when it collided with a medical college complex.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is currently conducting its own inquiry into the crash.

Chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, the committee includes members such as the civil aviation secretary, additional secretary in the home ministry, representatives from various departments in Gujarat, the Indian Air Force, and other relevant authorities.

The panel's mandate includes identifying the root cause of the crash, evaluating contributing factors like mechanical issues, human error, weather conditions, regulatory adherence, and more. It will also propose necessary improvements and develop SOPs based on international best practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Furthermore, the committee will review emergency response protocols, coordination among stakeholders, and the handling of post-crash situations. It will also assess existing guidelines, examine past aircraft accidents in India, and recommend policy changes, operational enhancements, and training upgrades to enhance safety measures.

The panel will have unrestricted access to various records, including flight data, cockpit voice recordings, maintenance logs, ATC communications, and witness statements. Additionally, it will collaborate with foreign agencies if necessary.
