Minimum wage earners can now buy rice at P20 per kilo through the government's program launched on Friday, 13 June. The program was officially launched at the Manila Harbor Center by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), in partnership with Manila Harbor Center Port Services Inc. (MHCPSI).

Low-wage workers now have the opportunity to purchase rice for only P20 per kilo thanks to a new government initiative launched on June 13.

The program, known as 'Benteng Bigas', was officially introduced at the Manila Harbor Center through a collaboration between the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Manila Harbor Center Port Services Inc. (MHCPSI).

DOLE stated that the program aims to provide food assistance to minimum wage earners, particularly those who are part of labor unions.

In a statement, the National Food Authority (NFA) Region 10 confirmed that the DA currently holds a sufficient supply of rice in its storage facilities.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized that the initiative goes beyond rice provision, highlighting the government's commitment to supporting those in need.

He also mentioned that the program aligns with President Marcos' vision of making essential food items, such as rice, more accessible to the public.

The rice available under the 'Benteng Bigas' program is sourced from local farmers and procured by the NFA.
