The remarkable achievement of Rica Marbebe, one of the top five passers in the May 2025 CPA licensure examination, showcases her determination and perseverance in overcoming financial challenges.
Rica's upbringing in a financially constrained yet loving family, with her father working at a motorcycle parts shop and her mother caring for a sibling with special needs, highlighted the struggles they faced. The family's income from a small sari-sari store often fell short of meeting their basic needs.
In 2019, a family emergency exposed the severity of their financial situation when Rica's younger sibling suddenly collapsed. With no means to reach a hospital due to financial constraints, Rica felt helpless. This moment served as a turning point, motivating her to strive for a better future.
Despite financial hardships, Rica's determination led her to secure the 5th spot in the CPA licensure examination. She emphasized the importance of relentless effort and a clear purpose in achieving her goals.
Seeking to change her family's circumstances, Rica pursued education and was accepted into the SM Foundation College Scholarship Program. The scholarship covered her tuition, books, and allowances, alleviating the financial burden on her family and allowing her to focus on her studies.
During the pandemic, Rica faced challenges attending online classes with limited resources but remained resilient. The scholarship not only provided financial support but also opened doors to mentorship, networking opportunities, and a supportive community of SM scholars and alumni.
Completing her Accountancy degree with Summa Cum Laude honors from the University of Mindanao-Davao City, Rica ranked fifth in the May 2025 CPA Licensure Exam. As she embarks on her professional journey, Rica values the networking opportunities and mentorship provided by the scholarship.
Looking ahead, Rica aims to pay it forward by helping others through education, reflecting the core values of SM Foundation in serving the community and alleviating poverty through education.
