JERUSALEM/DUBAI - Iran and Israel traded missiles and airstrikes on Saturday, the day after Israel launched a sweeping air offensive against its old enemy, killing commanders and scientists and bombing nuclear sites in a stated bid to stop it building an atomic weapon.

Over the weekend, Israel and Iran engaged in missile exchanges and airstrikes following Israel's sweeping air offensive against Iran. The attack aimed to halt Iran's nuclear program by targeting commanders, scientists, and nuclear sites.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes had significantly set back Iran's nuclear program and vowed to intensify the attacks, promising more to come in the days ahead.

Iran reported around 60 fatalities, including 20 children, in an attack on a housing complex. Israel claimed to have struck more than 150 targets across the country.

Residents in Israel sought shelter as air raid sirens blared, missiles streaked across the sky, and interceptors were deployed. At least three people were killed, with Iran launching around 200 ballistic missiles in four waves.

US President Donald Trump supported Israel's actions and warned of further consequences unless Iran complies with the US's demands to scale back its nuclear program.

Israel's Defense Minister threatened Tehran with retaliation if missile attacks on Israeli territory persist.

Iran had vowed to retaliate after Israel's offensive, which resulted in significant damage to Iran's nuclear and military leadership. Tehran warned allies of Israel that their military bases in the region would also be targeted.

Despite threats of retaliation, Iran's options are limited due to the weakening of its regional proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah.

The escalating conflict has raised concerns of a broader regional conflict, prompting Gulf Arab states to call for calm as oil prices surged.

Iran's overnight attacks included ballistic missiles and drones, resulting in casualties in both Israel and Iran.

Israel's military reported intercepting Iranian missiles and drones, with rockets also fired from Gaza.

Iran suffered significant casualties and damage to residential areas during Israel's two-day offensive, with reports of civilian deaths and destruction of buildings.

Israel targeted Iran's nuclear facilities, causing damage to sites in Natanz and Isfahan. The military claimed to have eliminated top commanders and nuclear scientists involved in the program.

The conflict has stalled talks between Iran and the US aimed at resolving the nuclear dispute, with the next meeting postponed due to the ongoing attacks.
