Galway has earned a spot in the TG4 All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals after defeating Donegal with a score of 1-11 to 1-02 in Lifford. Ailbhe Davoren's goal just before half-time played a crucial role in securing the victory.
The Tribeswomen, who had previously defeated Tipperary, are now set to finish as Group 1 winners and will have the advantage of hosting their next match at Tuam Stadium.
Donegal, who were playing their first championship match after a five-week break following their loss in the Ulster final to Armagh, put up a strong defensive effort to contain Galway's attacks. Aoife Molloy, in her first start since an injury in the 2024 league against Mayo, scored for Galway in the sixth minute.
Galway struggled to score again until the 25th minute, with five missed opportunities. Donegal managed to disrupt Galway's attacks but had difficulty creating chances at the other end. Nicola Ward, the 2024 player of the year, set up Ailbhe Davoren for the breakthrough goal after a one-two with Lynsey Noone. Eva Noone added another score just before halftime, giving Galway a 1-02 to 0-00 lead.
In the second half, Galway extended their lead with points from Davoren, Olivia Divilly, Andrea Trill, and Leanne Coen. Donegal managed to score through Feena McManamon and Katie Dowds, but Galway responded with scores from the Divilly sisters and Trill to secure a 1-11 to 1-02 victory.
Galway will now host another group runner-up in the quarter-finals in July, as they look to continue their winning streak in the competition.
