Various low-lying areas of Mangaluru city have reported waterlogging and roads beneath the Pumpwell flyover were submerged, causing severe traffic disruptions.

Following heavy rainfall in Mangaluru since Saturday afternoon, various low-lying areas of the city have experienced waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada district, due to the ongoing heavy showers.

Reports indicate that roads beneath the Pumpwell flyover were submerged, with a bus breaking down at a flooded stretch, requiring passengers and locals to push it to the roadside. Streets in Car Street, Lower Bendur, Kottara, and other low-lying areas have also faced heavy inundation and flooding. The Padil railway underpass and parts of Car Street have witnessed flooding, affecting vehicular movement. Additionally, rainwater has entered homes in several low-lying residential areas of Mangaluru.

Due to relentless rainfall, highway authorities have restricted the movement of two and three-wheelers along a crucial stretch of National Highway-66 between Suratkal and Nantoor Junction in Dakshina Kannada district. This decision was made to divert smaller vehicles onto designated service roads during the monsoon period, which is expected to last until September 2025. The speed limit along the affected stretch has been reduced to 50 km/h to minimize accidents, and all highway users are urged to adhere to this limit and follow traffic diversion signs.

IMD had previously issued red alerts for the district over the past few days, but Friday's rainfall was particularly intense. As of the morning of 16 June, the red alert remains in effect for Dakshina Kannada district, with authorities warning of continued heavy rainfall.
