A tragic incident in Minnesota has resulted in the shooting of two Democratic state politicians, leading to the death of one and her husband, while the other was wounded in what officials believe to be targeted attacks.
State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband from Brooklyn Park were among the victims of this senseless violence. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife from Champlin were also targeted in these pre-dawn attacks.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the attack on the politicians' homes as a "politically motivated assassination". Authorities urged residents of the two Minneapolis suburbs to remain indoors as they searched for the suspect who was reportedly posing as a police officer.
US Senator Amy Klobuchar confirmed the identities of the victims in a statement, expressing shock and offering prayers to the families of the Hortman and Hoffman. She emphasized the close friendships and dedication to public service of both legislators.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the targeted shooting and vowed to prosecute the perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law, stating that such violence would not be tolerated.
Governor Walz, who was briefed on the situation, activated Minnesota's Emergency Operations Center and assured that the police in the affected suburbs would receive all necessary resources from the state.
