Health agency warns festivals are ‘perfect place’ for measles to spread

Glastonbury festival-goers have been advised to ensure they are vaccinated against measles due to a rise in outbreaks of the highly contagious disease. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has cautioned that measles is currently spreading across the country, with festivals being identified as potential hotspots for transmission.

The UKHSA's June update has highlighted 'ongoing outbreaks' of measles in various regions of England, including London. Most cases have been observed in unvaccinated children under 10 years old, although there have been instances reported in young adults as well.

As the Glastonbury festival kicks off on 25 June, drawing families and music enthusiasts alike, Dr. Alasdair Wood from UKHSA South West emphasized the importance of being informed about current health risks. He urged attendees to check their vaccination status for measles, mumps, and rubella before attending the festival.

Aside from measles, Dr. Wood also noted a rise in cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly affecting young individuals. Early testing is recommended to detect and address any potential infections promptly.

Global measles cases have been increasing, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting 127,350 cases in Europe in 2024 - double the number from the previous year and the highest since 1997. Outbreaks have been documented in countries like France, Italy, Spain, and Germany this year, prompting the UKHSA to advise vaccination prior to international travel.

In England, a decrease in childhood vaccination rates has left many children vulnerable. Dr. Vanessa Saliba, a consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, emphasized the severity of measles, which can lead to complications such as ear and chest infections, brain inflammation, and hospitalization.

Organizer Emily Eavis disclosed that Glastonbury festival has sold fewer tickets this year to prevent overcrowding. This precaution, combined with vaccination awareness, aims to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
