Dr Dhaval Gameti said 270 bodies have been recovered from the site of Thursday's plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Vigils to honor the victims have been held in Ahmedabad, India, and the UK following the tragic Air India plane crash. The death toll has now risen to 270, with recovery efforts ongoing.

Authorities are working to determine the number of casualties on the ground and are in the process of identifying victims through DNA matching. The London-bound flight crashed shortly after take-off, claiming the lives of all but one of the 242 passengers and crew members, including a 40-year-old British man.

Doctors in India have confirmed the recovery of 270 bodies from the crash site, with investigations being led by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) with assistance from teams in the US and UK.

A black box was recovered from the crash site on Friday, which is expected to provide crucial information for the inquiry into the tragic incident, according to India's civil aviation minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu.

The aircraft, a Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, crashed into a building used by doctors at the BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital less than a minute after departing from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

Dr. Dhaval Gameti, President of the Junior Doctors' Association at the college, confirmed that the hospital has received the bodies of all 270 victims, with the majority believed to be passengers and crew members of Flight AI171.

Additional safety checks have been ordered for Air India's Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 fleet by India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), as a precautionary measure in response to the crash.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and hospital to meet with survivors and injured individuals, expressing the nation's prayers for their swift recovery. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson also visited the site, describing the experience as deeply moving.
