AHMEDABAD, India: Grieving families were due to hold funerals in India on Sunday (Jun 15) for their relatives who were among at least 279 killed in one of the world's worst plane crash

Grieving families in India were scheduled to hold funerals on Sunday for their loved ones who were among the 279 individuals killed in one of the most devastating plane crashes in recent history.

Health officials have started the process of handing over the first passenger bodies that were identified through DNA testing, presenting them in white coffins in Ahmedabad.

Tushar Leuva, an NGO worker involved in the recovery efforts, expressed the heavy burden he feels, wondering how they can deliver the bodies to the families.

Out of the 242 passengers and crew members aboard the Air India jet that crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad on Thursday, only one person survived, while at least 38 individuals on the ground lost their lives.

Leuva mentioned that despite the emotional challenge, they have to proceed with the necessary actions, such as opening the gate for the families to receive the bodies.

One relative of a victim, who chose to remain anonymous, shared that they were advised not to open the coffin upon receiving it.

Witnesses recounted seeing severely burnt bodies and scattered remains following the crash of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which turned into a fireball shortly after takeoff and collided with medical facilities.

Family members have been providing DNA samples for identification purposes, with 31 individuals confirmed as of Sunday morning.

Dr. Rajnish Patel from Ahmedabad's civil hospital emphasized the meticulous and slow nature of the identification process, underscoring the importance of precision in the procedures.

Most of the individuals injured on the ground have been discharged, except for one or two who remain in critical condition.
