Scottie Scheffler has outside chance on rain-softened course but Rory McIlroy is out of contention

During the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club, Sam Burns continued to lead the field after shooting a 69 in the third round, finishing at four-under-par 206. This put him one shot ahead of Adam Scott and JJ Spaun, who both carded a 69 as well. Only four players were under par after 54 holes, with Norway's Viktor Hovland three shots behind Burns.

Adam Scott, the only player in the top-10 with Major success, made a significant move with a 67 to position himself well for the final round. On a rain-softened course, the number of rounds in the 60s increased to 12, with Carlos Ortiz moving up to fifth place with a 67. Tyrrell Hatton also made a notable move up the leaderboard.

Scott, playing in his 96th consecutive Major, expressed his desire to challenge for the title and add another Major victory to his resume. Burns, a five-time PGA Tour winner, remained composed throughout the round, avoiding any major mistakes. Hovland, a seven-time PGA Tour winner, acknowledged the importance of fixing his driving issues to contend for the title.

Hatton, balancing life on the LIV Golf tour with his personal ambitions, emphasized the significance of performing well in Majors and earning points for various rankings. Despite the pressure, he remained focused on taking one shot at a time and giving his best effort in the final round.
