Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo reiterated the Philippines’ dedication to multilateralism and global peace while outlining the country’s priorities in its pursuit of a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term.
During a diplomatic reception commemorating the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence at the Philippine Center in New York, Manalo addressed over 300 diplomats and guests. He emphasized the Philippines’ historical significance as Asia’s first republic and its unwavering commitment to equality among nations.
Manalo stated, “The Philippines will bring to the Security Council 80 years of multilateral experience, a tradition of principled diplomacy, and a readiness to listen, engage, and lead with purpose.” If elected, he promised to uphold the UN Charter sincerely and resolutely.
Highlighting the country’s reputation as a reliable partner, trailblazer, and peacemaker on the global stage, Manalo expressed the Philippines’ stance on unwavering multilateralism, seeking solutions and common ground even in challenging times.
Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the UN, emphasized the ongoing campaign for the country’s UNSC seat, showcasing its dedication to addressing global issues. He called the occasion a day of pride for all Filipinos, urging them to cherish their freedoms and cultural heritage.
In a video message, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reassured the international community of the Philippines’ commitment to promoting understanding, healing, and reconstruction worldwide. He urged support for the country’s bid in the upcoming June 2026 elections.
The Philippines aims to represent the Asia-Pacific Group in the 2026 Security Council elections, seeking to return after its last term in 2004-2005. The UNSC, with 15 members, plays a crucial role in maintaining global peace and security as per the UN Charter.
