Iranian Australians opposed to the country's authoritarian regime say they feel "mixed" emotions of anxiety for their loved ones, and relief high-level regime officials have been killed, after Israel launched an attack on the country last week.

Iranian Australians who oppose the authoritarian regime in Iran are experiencing mixed emotions following an Israeli attack that killed high-level regime officials. The attack, which occurred last week, targeted military bases and nuclear research sites, resulting in the deaths of three senior military commanders and two scientists involved in Iran's nuclear program.

Since the initial attack, both Iran and Israel have engaged in retaliatory strikes, with reports of civilian casualties in both countries. Iranian Australians, like Nos Hosseini from Melbourne, express concern for their loved ones in Iran, particularly those residing in areas targeted by missiles.

Nos Hosseini, a spokesperson for the Iranian Women's Association, highlighted the anxiety felt by families in Iran who have experienced the impact of the attacks firsthand. While the ongoing conflict raises fears of further violence, there is also a sense of relief among some individuals who view the targeting of regime officials as a positive development.

Rana Dadpour, the founder of advocacy group AUSIRAN and a lecturer at James Cook University, shared similar sentiments, describing the current situation as confusing and uncertain. Having left Iran in 2012 due to concerns over the regime's oppressive tactics, Dadpour emphasized the human reactions of relief and nervousness felt by many Iranian Australians.

Siamak Ghahreman, president of the Australian Iranian Community Organisation in Sydney, echoed these sentiments, noting the paradoxical feelings of comfort and fear among Iranians in response to the targeted attacks. While there is some reassurance in the precision of the strikes, there remains a looming fear of a full-scale war and its potential impact on innocent civilians.

Despite the apprehension surrounding the escalating conflict, there is a glimmer of hope among Iranian Australians for a positive outcome. Many express optimism that the recent events may galvanize the Iranian people to rise up against the regime and strive for a more democratic and free society.

As the situation continues to unfold, there is a collective desire among Iranian Australians for a peaceful resolution that paves the way for a brighter future in Iran.
