Deaths due to COVID-19 cases increased by 10 to 97, revealed the health ministry's data on Sunday, June 15.

Total COVID-19 cases in India dropped on Sunday, with the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs reporting 7,383 cases as of Sunday, June 15. The cases declined by 17 — from 7,400 on Saturday to 7,383 cases on Sunday.

The data on June 15 excluded fresh tally from a few states including West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Puducherry, and Tripura.

Cases in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh increased by 10, but they dropped by 102 in Kerala.

However, deaths due to COVID-19 cases increased by 10 to 97, the health ministry said. Three deaths were reported in Delhi, five in Kerala and two in Maharashtra.

Following a rise in COVID-19 cases in Singapore and Hong Kong, India had also begun to witness an uptick in infections, particularly in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad in May.

As of 19 May 2025, the number of active COVID-19 cases in India was reported at 257 — a very low figure considering the country's large population. Almost all of these cases are mild, with no hospitalisation required.

Specialists suggested that the modest rise in India may not accurately represent the true number of COVID-19 infections, as many individuals with respiratory symptoms do not pursue COVID-19 testing.

Nonetheless, there is no indication that the virus has mutated to cause more severe disease. They also note that the “zero” active cases reported in several states might reflect insufficient testing rather than a genuine absence of infections.

The recent surge in cases across Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand was largely attributed to various descendants of the omicron variant, which swept the globe in 2021-2022.

The Hong Kong authorities had said in a statement on 15 May that the XDV strain of the COVID-19 virus has been circulating locally since late March this year.
