A preschool teacher in Singapore confessed to intentionally tripping a 20-month-old toddler, resulting in the child falling and sustaining injuries. The incident, captured on CCTV, showed the teacher causing the toddler to bleed from her nose and bruise her face.
Saiidah Kamarudin, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of ill-treating the girl, leading to unnecessary pain and injury. The victim's identity and the childcare center involved have been kept confidential.
Saiidah, who worked at the center from September to November 2023, was responsible for caring for students, including the toddler in question. The CCTV footage presented in court displayed Saiidah tripping the toddler multiple times, resulting in the child falling and getting hurt.
During an incident in November 2023, Saiidah caused the toddler to stumble and fall twice while trying to clean her up in the toilet area. The toddler suffered a bleeding nose and facial bruising as a result of Saiidah's actions.
Following the incident, the toddler's father reported the matter to the police after being dissatisfied with the school's explanation. The doctor who examined the child noted mild bruises on her face.
Saiidah will appear in court for mitigation and sentencing on Jul 28. Under the Children and Young Persons Act, the offense of ill-treating a child can lead to a maximum penalty of eight years in jail or a fine of up to S$8,000 (US$6,200), or both.
