Area with likely Zika Transmission (AZT) is identified when positive Zika virus signals are found in wastewater or mosquito samples near a reported Zika case. This helps in monitoring the spread of the virus.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has been conducting wastewater testing for Zika virus at various locations across the island since September 2023. Additionally, mosquito samples from areas where Zika cases have been reported are also tested as part of the surveillance programme.

This surveillance method works alongside clinical testing and is especially valuable for tracking diseases like Zika, where most infections do not show symptoms. Even when symptoms do occur, they are usually mild.

For more information on Zika, including its symptoms, the number of cases, and how to prevent Aedes mosquito breeding, visit the NEA website.
