Authorities in Vietnam confirmed on Monday that the death toll from heavy rains and flooding caused by Typhoon Wutip has reached seven. The typhoon made landfall in southern China over the weekend with winds reaching up to 128km/h before weakening into a tropical storm.

According to the disaster and dyke management authority, seven individuals have lost their lives, 100 houses have been damaged, and nearly 60,000 hectares of crops have been submerged in central Vietnam.

Vietnam typically experiences around twelve tropical storms annually, with June usually affecting the northern regions before moving southward later in the year.

Late last week, central Vietnam, including the historic town of Hoi An, faced severe flooding leading to fatalities, transportation disruptions, and agricultural losses.

Experts attribute the increase in extreme weather events to human-induced climate change, which heightens the risk of devastating floods.

In 2023, natural disasters in Vietnam resulted in 514 fatalities, a significant increase compared to previous years. The country was particularly impacted by Typhoon Yagi in September 2024, which claimed 345 lives and caused an estimated economic loss of US$3.3 billion in northern Vietnam.
