On eve of Windsor-Essex summer camp season comes warning from local health unit urging summer camps to plan for highly infectious virus.

As the summer camp season approaches in Windsor-Essex, the local Health Unit is advising camp providers to take precautions against the current measles outbreak in Ontario. Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, the medical officer of health, emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of this highly contagious disease in group settings like camps.

The Health Unit is urging day camps and summer programs to maintain vaccination records for all campers and staff in case of an outbreak. They are also encouraging providers to familiarize themselves with measles symptoms, reporting procedures, and infection control measures on their website.

Common symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, drowsiness, irritability, and a red rash that spreads across the body. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours and is easily transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or direct contact with infected saliva or mucus.

Individuals who have not been vaccinated against measles are at risk of contracting the disease. For more information, visit the Health Unit's website or contact the Infectious Disease Prevention Department.
