The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, one of the world’s largest warships, is reportedly headed to the Middle East to boost the US’ presence as Israel and Iran do battle.

Tehran has reached out to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman to urge US President Donald Trump to intervene with Israel for an immediate ceasefire, as per two Iranian and three regional sources informed Reuters on Monday (Jun 16).

In exchange, Iran is prepared to show flexibility in nuclear negotiations with the US.

Over the weekend, Gulf leaders and diplomats engaged in discussions with Tehran, Washington, and others to prevent further escalation as Israel and Iran engaged in their most significant conflict to date.

One of the Iranian sources mentioned that Iran is open to adjusting its stance in nuclear talks if a ceasefire is achieved.

A Gulf source close to government officials expressed deep concerns that the conflict may spiral out of control.

Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia have all urged Washington to push Israel for a ceasefire and to resume discussions with Tehran for a nuclear agreement, according to the Gulf source.

The White House and US State Department have not yet responded to requests for comments.

Separately, the Group of Seven (G7) leaders have a preliminary joint statement advocating for de-escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict, based on two sources and a draft seen by Reuters.

However, Trump has not approved the draft yet, as per the sources. The draft emphasizes maintaining market stability, including energy markets, and acknowledges Israel's right to self-defense.

Israel's military issued an alert for residents in a northern Tehran district to evacuate "immediately" on Monday, announcing its intention to conduct airstrikes in the area.

Iran state TV was reportedly targeted in an Israeli strike on Tehran, following Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz's statement that Iran's state media outlets were on the brink of disappearing.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards also issued an evacuation notice for Tel Aviv residents, as reported by Iranian state media, shortly after Israel's warning.

Meanwhile, the US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz altered its course on Monday, departing Southeast Asia and heading towards the Middle East to bolster the US' presence amid the Israel-Iran conflict.

The carrier was observed passing through the Malacca Strait toward the Indian Ocean at 1345 GMT (9.45pm Singapore time), according to Marine Traffic.

A Vietnamese official confirmed to AFP that a scheduled event aboard the USS Nimitz in Danang on Jun 20 was cancelled due to an "emergent operational requirement" as per a letter from the US embassy.

The movement of the USS Nimitz coincided with the fourth day of escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, with casualties mounting and no resolution in sight despite international appeals for de-escalation.

Iran reported launching a missile attack on Israel in response to Israeli strikes that have claimed the lives of 224 individuals, including military figures, scientists, and civilians, according to Iranian authorities.

US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee disclosed that Iran's missile assault had caused minor damage to a building used by the American embassy in Tel Aviv.
