The Women's Super League is set to expand to 14 teams from the 2026/27 season. Currently, one team is relegated and promoted each season, but this will change to two teams each. The top two teams from the Women's Super League 2 will be promoted to reach the 14-team mark for the 2026/27 campaign.

The final spot will be determined by a relegation play-off between the 12th-placed WSL team and the third-placed WSL 2 team. Starting from the 2026/27 season, the 14th-placed team will be automatically relegated, while the 13th-placed team will face a play-off with the WSL 2 runners-up.

The decision to expand the league was voted on by WSL shareholders and is pending approval from the Football Association (FA) board. The aim is to enhance the women's football pyramid, raise standards, and encourage investment across the board.

Analysts believe the new rules will add drama to the league, despite facing some criticism. The prospect of relegation remains for the lowest-performing team in the WSL, but the addition of two promotion spots from WSL 2 is seen as a positive development for clubs investing in women's football.

Furthermore, Sky Sports recently secured a new five-year deal to broadcast nearly 90% of WSL games. Starting next season, Sky will air 118 matches from the WSL, with 78 games exclusively shown. This partnership also includes coverage of the Women's Championship and Women's League Cup, bringing more women's football to a wider audience.

With an increase in televised women's sports, including cricket, tennis, golf, netball, and more, football fans can look forward to an expanded lineup of women's football matches alongside the Premier League coverage on Sky Sports.
