Tata's Growing Role in Apple's Supply Chain as India-Made iPhone Exports Surge

In May, 89% of all iPhones made in India were shipped to the U.S., up sharply from 58% a year earlier — a clear reflection of Apple’s strategy to bypass steep U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made products

Apple's move towards India has attracted significant attention, with Tata Electronics emerging as a key supplier for Apple in 2025. This has contributed to the increase in India's iPhone exports, especially to the U.S., amidst escalating U.S.-China tariff tensions.

Between January and May 2025, Apple exported 20.4 million iPhones, a 57% year-on-year growth, with a majority of these shipments going to the U.S. Tata Electronics, shipping 7.5 million iPhones during this period, accounted for 37% of India's iPhone exports, a significant increase from the previous year.

This growth can be attributed to Tata's acquisition of Wistron's assembly facility, expansion of electronics manufacturing at Hosur, and control over India's component ecosystem, leading to faster production cycles and reduced import dependency.

While Foxconn remains Apple's largest manufacturing partner in India, Tata's rapid growth signifies a notable shift in Apple's strategy, making Tata a crucial part of Apple's global supply chain.

Apple's focus on India is evident in the fact that 89% of all iPhones made in India in May were shipped to the U.S., a substantial increase from the previous year. This move aligns with Apple's strategy to avoid high U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made products.

The company aims to manufacture a majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. in India by the end of 2026. Production is already increasing significantly, with plans to launch the iPhone 17 Pro models in September.

Apple's suppliers, including Foxconn and Tata Electronics, are expanding their capacity to support this growth. Foxconn's facilities in Hyderabad and Bengaluru are ramping up production, while Tata Electronics' new facility in Hosur is assembling various iPhone models and doubling enclosure production for Apple's devices.

In the first five months of 2025, Foxconn has shipped iPhones worth $4.4 billion to the U.S. from India, surpassing its total exports in 2024. Apple's shift towards India has not gone unnoticed, with former U.S. President Donald Trump expressing his disapproval of Apple's offshore expansion.
