Johnny Sexton says he always expected to return to rugby, even if his acceleration to a full-time coaching role has arrived earlier than expected.

Johnny Sexton anticipated a return to rugby, but his transition to a full-time coaching position came sooner than expected. After retiring from playing following the 2023 World Cup, he ventured into the business world with a sustainable packaging company. However, he has now re-entered the rugby scene on a full-time basis.

In November of last year, Sexton began his coaching journey when Andy Farrell approached him to work with the Ireland squad as a part-time kicking coach. Following his commitments with the British and Irish Lions, he will transition to this role full-time starting in August.

Expressing his enthusiasm for coaching with the Lions and Ireland, Sexton shared his passion for being back in a familiar environment where he could contribute to the development of young players and the leadership group.

Although he enjoyed his time away from the game, Sexton eagerly seized the opportunity to return to rugby full-time after experiencing coaching in recent months. His decision was based on his desire to delve deeper into coaching and his preference to remain in Ireland.

As part of the Lions group, Sexton is surrounded by a strong Irish rugby presence, with 16 Irish players in the squad and a coaching staff predominantly from the Irish setup. This includes Andy Farrell, Simon Easterby, Andrew Goodman, John Fogarty, and David Nucifora.

Sexton emphasized that the selection process for the Lions squad was thorough and merit-based, with a focus on form and performance over an extended period. He commended the meticulous approach taken by Andy Farrell in assembling a squad that he believes gives them the best chance of success on the tour.

The Lions recently trained at UCD in Dublin ahead of their send-off game against Argentina at Aviva Stadium. Players like Tadhg Furlong, Jamison Gibson-Park, Hugo Keenan, and James Ryan were present, preparing for the upcoming challenges on the tour.

Departures from the squad included Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour, highlighting the dynamic nature of the team as they gear up for their upcoming fixtures.
