As measles remains a concern in the Windsor-Essex area, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is advising day camps and summer programs to take proactive measures to safeguard the health of children and staff.

The WECHU is recommending camp operators and organizers to visit their website for the latest guidance and recommendations to follow before starting their programs.

This guidance includes:

  • Messaging to remind campers and staff to have vaccination records ready in case of a measles exposure
  • Recognizing symptoms of measles and procedures for suspected cases
  • Reporting requirements and protocols for managing measles cases and contacts
  • Infection prevention and control measures, such as cleaning protocols in case of an exposure

Additionally, the WECHU is asking all camp and program organizers to provide their contact information through the WECHU website. This will ensure prompt communication in case of a confirmed or suspected measles case, allowing public health officials to respond swiftly and efficiently to protect everyone involved and minimize disruptions in the camp activities.

Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, Medical Officer of Health at the WECHU, emphasized the importance of vaccination and preparedness in preventing the rapid spread of measles in group settings like camps.

The WECHU is closely monitoring the situation and will issue updates as necessary. Camp organizers are advised to regularly check the website and subscribe to WECHU alerts for the most current public health updates.
