Gemini App Enhances User Experience with New Nav Drawer on Android

Google is updating the Gemini app on Android with a nav drawer, just like on the web, that brings a number of usability upgrades.

Google is enhancing the user experience of the Gemini app on Android by introducing a new navigation drawer, similar to the one on the web, that offers several usability improvements.

Previous Design

In the previous version, the Gemini app on Android featured a 'chat' icon in the top-left corner that would open the 'Chat & Gems' page. This page displayed the five most recent conversations and Gems, requiring users to tap through to access more.

Now, a hamburger button has been added that opens a navigation drawer. Similar to gemini.google.com, the drawer starts with a 'New chat' button, followed by two recent Gems, and a link to 'Explore Gems.' The 'Recent' history list allows for infinite scrolling, a feature introduced to the web in early May. Pinned conversations are displayed at the top.

Enhanced Navigation

The new navigation drawer can now be accessed while viewing a conversation or other pages within the Gemini app. Instead of overlaying content, this component smoothly slides the main screen to the right.

On Android tablets, the navigation drawer is always open but can be hidden to provide a fullscreen experience, particularly during chat sessions. The design closely mirrors that of the website.

Rollout and Update

The updated nav drawer is part of Google app version 16.23, currently in beta testing. Users may need to Force stop the app from App info after updating to see the changes.
