Ernakulam reports 34 malaria cases, majority imported, emphasizing need for testing, prevention, and vector control measures.

Ernakulam has recently reported a total of 34 confirmed cases of malaria, with 21 cases recorded between May 1 and June 13. In April, 13 cases were reported in various parts of the district, according to official data from the Department of Health.

The majority of cases were indigenous malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax, which is considered less severe than Plasmodium falciparum. Most cases were either imported from other states or introduced through inter-State travel, as reported by district health authorities.

Confirmed cases were reported in several areas including Alangad, Keezhmad, Munambam, Parakadavu, and more. Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan from the Indian Medical Association highlighted that Kerala, being a low-prevalence area for malaria, sees cases primarily due to imported diseases brought in by migrant workers and international travelers.

Dr. Jayadevan emphasized the importance of suspecting malaria in patients with relevant travel history and clinical symptoms such as fever, anaemia, and jaundice. He stressed the need for testing to identify new cases and implementing vector control measures to prevent further spread.

Dr. Ashadevi, the District Medical Officer, mentioned that most cases were reported in areas with a high number of inter-State workers. To prevent further spread, additional screening camps have been set up in these areas. The majority of diagnosed individuals were asymptomatic.
