Rapper R Kelly has been hospitalised after an alleged overdose in prison, according to a court filing from his lawyers

R Kelly, the embattled rapper serving time in prison, has been rushed to the hospital following an alleged overdose, according to his legal team. This incident occurred after he received excessive medication from prison staff beyond his regular dose, leading to his admission to Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. The 58-year-old, currently serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking and racketeering, was reportedly placed in isolation on June 10th with his anxiety medication and was given additional pills by prison personnel, causing him to lose consciousness three days later.

After spending two days in the hospital, Kelly was returned to his cell. His attorney, Beau Brindley, claimed that the overdose was not a mistake but a deliberate act that endangered his life. Brindley stated that Kelly is not safe in federal custody and that keeping him in prison under such conditions constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Kelly's legal team is now seeking clemency from US President Donald Trump, citing concerns for the rapper's safety in prison.

Brindley has filed an emergency motion for Kelly's early release, alleging that immediately after the motion was made public, Kelly was placed in solitary confinement with restricted communication and living conditions. Kelly is said to be fearful of consuming prison food due to concerns about potential poisoning. Additionally, a fellow inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine, claims in court filings that he was approached by three senior Bureau of Prisons officials to kill Kelly in exchange for a promise of escape from custody. Stine, who is reportedly a member of the Aryan Brotherhood and diagnosed with terminal cancer, informed Kelly of the plot instead of carrying it out.
