Former Premier League referee David Coote has been hit with multiple Football Association charges after a leaked video surfaced of him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. Coote was dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following an investigation into his behavior. The FA has now charged him for breaching FA Rule E3 by acting in an improper manner and using abusive language, including a reference to nationality.
The video in question emerged shortly after Coote officiated a Premier League match between Liverpool and Aston Villa. In the video, he is heard criticizing Liverpool's performance and referring to Klopp in a derogatory manner. Coote's conduct has also led to a ban by UEFA in relation to Euro 2024.
No charges have been filed regarding allegations of gambling misconduct against Coote, which were also investigated. The FA statement confirmed the charges against Coote for his comments about Klopp, which were recorded in a video from July 2020.
