A new-look, lucrative mixed doubles event in New York has encouraged top singles players to feature

Carlos Alcaraz is set to team up with British No 1 Emma Raducanu in the upcoming US Open mixed doubles event, adding to the excitement of the tournament.

The mixed doubles competition, a new addition to the New York event, will take place during the qualifying week on the main courts, Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong, on August 19 and August 20. This means that the champions will be crowned before the singles draw is even announced.

Top players like Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, and Nick Kyrgios will also be participating in the event, vying for the $1 million prize money, a significant increase from the previous year.

Some of the other notable pairings include Novak Djokovic with Olga Danilovic, Jack Draper with Zheng Qinwen, and Stefanos Tsitsipas with Paula Badosa.

The scoring system for the event will feature sets played to four games, sudden death deuce, and a tiebreak at 4-4, with a 10-point tiebreak instead of the third set. The final will have normal six-game sets.

Unlike traditional doubles events, where pairs are based on rankings, the US Open has selected eight pairs based on combined singles rankings and eight pairs through wildcard entries.

USTA CEO Lew Sherr expressed excitement about the unique opportunity the mixed doubles event presents, with top players showing enthusiasm for the format.

The US Open has also extended its tournament to 15 days, aligning with other Grand Slam events, to accommodate the mixed doubles competition. This move aims to make the game more accessible and entertaining for fans.

With the inclusion of top men and women players competing side by side, the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship promises to be a fast-paced and highly competitive event that fans around the world can enjoy.
