During the Indian Premier League, Bumrah discussed his availability for the Test matches with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and decided that it would be best for him to focus on his bowling rather than take on a leadership role. As a result of Bumrah's decision, Shubman Gill was appointed as the new Test captain for the upcoming series against England.
