Taoiseach Micheál Martin emphasized the need for stronger actions to address significant failings in nursing homes, suggesting that the 'nuclear option' of closing them down should be considered. He highlighted the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) as having a fundamental power in this regard.
During a Dáil session, Mr. Martin responded to concerns raised by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald and Labour leader Ivana Bacik regarding the lack of power at Hiqa. This discussion followed the release of Hiqa's interim report on Emeis Ireland nursing homes, which revealed disturbing facts such as non-compliance with fire regulations.
McDonald criticized Emeis for disregarding regulations and inspections, pointing out that Hiqa lacked the legal authority to impose fines on such facilities. She called for new powers to be granted to Hiqa to address these issues.
The debate also touched on the increase in privately-owned nursing homes over the years, with Martin acknowledging that closure should be an option in cases of repeated non-compliance. Both McDonald and Bacik emphasized the need for stronger government action to restore trust in the inspection system and address systemic issues in nursing home care.
