Human rights law too often "protects those who break the rules", the justice secretary says.

The Justice Secretary of the UK has expressed the view that human rights law often protects individuals who violate rules, with the Conservative party pushing for the removal of this protection in immigration cases and the ability to deport all foreign criminals.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has suggested that the UK may need to withdraw from the ECHR due to its misuse as a tool to challenge democratic decisions and impede efforts to expel illegal immigrants and foreign offenders.

A commission has been established by Badenoch to investigate the potential repercussions of exiting the treaty, a move that has caused division within the Tory Party.

Several members of the Council of Europe have also demanded reforms to the ECHR to simplify the process of deporting foreign criminals.

In a joint letter in May, nine nations, including Italy and Denmark, highlighted instances where the convention had shielded the wrong individuals.

Alain Berset, the head of the Council of Europe, acknowledged the need for the convention to evolve in response to a changing global landscape during an interview with the Times earlier this month.

However, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey cautioned against the UK's withdrawal from the ECHR, warning that such a move would align the country with Russia under Vladimir Putin's leadership.

Davey emphasized the importance of engaging in meaningful discussions with other nations seeking modifications to the convention, noting that the existing framework serves the UK well and upholds the rights of numerous citizens.
