Australia’s diabetes epidemic is costing the health system a staggering $9.1 billion each year – almost three times more than previously estimated, according

A recent report by Diabetes Australia has revealed that the cost of diabetes in Australia has skyrocketed to $9.1 billion annually, which is almost three times higher than previously estimated. This epidemic poses a significant health challenge for the country, with over two million people currently living with diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes. Shockingly, every five minutes, another Australian is diagnosed with the condition, and without effective prevention measures, it is projected that up to 3.6 million people could be living with diabetes by 2050.

In the fiscal year 2020-21, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimated that $3.4 billion of healthcare expenditure was directly related to diabetes. However, a new analysis conducted by Diabetes Australia, incorporating national and international data on the excess health costs of diabetes and the current prevalence of the condition in Australia, suggests that the actual cost is nearly three times higher than previous estimates.

Justine Cain, the Group CEO of Diabetes Australia, emphasized the urgent need for a response to the diabetes epidemic, stating that the $9 billion cost to the health system is alarming and requires immediate action. She highlighted the importance of implementing initiatives to prevent type 2 diabetes and reduce the costly complications associated with all types of diabetes. By focusing on prevention, the pressure on the healthcare system can be alleviated.

Diabetes Australia is advocating for public education campaigns and policies aimed at reducing the burden of diabetes on the health system. Drawing parallels with successful prevention programs for other health conditions like melanoma and breast cancer, the organization stresses the importance of raising awareness about diabetes and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.

Ms. Cain pointed out that while genetics play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes, lifestyle changes can prevent or delay up to 58% of diagnoses. Increasing public awareness of risk factors and encouraging positive health behaviors are crucial steps in addressing the diabetes epidemic.

Diabetes Australia is calling for government investment in national diabetes prevention strategies, including awareness campaigns, school-based initiatives, and policies such as improved food labeling to mitigate the risk of type 2 diabetes and its complications. The organization believes that investing in prevention is essential for securing Australia's future health.
