Irish Rail has revealed plans to construct eight new stations and electrify the commuter line in Co Cork, creating a DART-like network for the county. The new stations will be located at Blarney/Stoneview, Monard, Blackpool/Kilbarry, Tivoli, Dunkettle, Ballynoe, Carrigtwohill West, and Water-Rock.
The introduction of an electric fleet aims to alleviate current congestion and reduce carbon emissions. A new depot at Ballyrichard More will be necessary for the additional carriages. The 'Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme' (CART) will run every ten minutes on three commuter lines to Mallow, Midleton, and Cobh.
These three stops will undergo upgrades to accommodate future capacity increases. All stations will also be enhanced to meet accessibility requirements, ensuring unassisted access for passengers. Blarney/Stoneview and Dunkettle have been earmarked as park and ride stops, fostering better connections between rail, bus, cycleways, and Cork's upcoming Luas line.
The public is urged to participate in seven consultation events across Cork and online. Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien encourages Cork residents to review Irish Rail's proposals. Junior transport ministers Seán Canney and Jerry Buttimer have welcomed the second phase of Iarnród Éireann's Cork enhancements. Irish Rail CEO Jim Meade and National Transport Authority's investment manager Marcello Corsi are actively promoting public engagement with the consultation process.
