The National Institute of Virology (NIV) is currently conducting genome sequencing to identify four new sub-variants of Omicron, believed to be connected to the recent increase in Covid cases in India. This scientific initiative is crucial for assessing vaccine effectiveness, as highlighted by Dr. Naveen Kumar, director at NIV under the ICMR.

Since mid-April, there has been a noticeable uptick in Covid cases, with the identification of four sub-variants: LF.7, XFG, JN.1.16, and NB.1.8.1. Initial analysis suggests that the JN.1.16 lineage was responsible for the spike, which was later surpassed by the XFG variant. The sequencing data has been shared with global databases for further analysis.

While the severity of current infections remains low and can be managed effectively with home care, health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring preparedness with resources such as oxygen and essential medications. The decision on developing new vaccines will depend on comprehensive evaluations and policy considerations.
