A recent study conducted by Heart & Stroke has unveiled a notable change in consumer behavior following the implementation of a sugar tax in the province.

The province recently announced the removal of this controversial tax, but the study conducted by researchers at Memorial University showcased a significant decrease in the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, indicating a shift in purchasing patterns.

Initially, many individuals expressed frustration over the price hikes, as they were unaware that the products they regularly purchased were subject to the sugar tax, leading to a change in their buying habits.

Researcher Rachel Prowse discovered that consumers began opting for diet or sugar-free alternatives to avoid the additional levy.

Data revealed that the tax resulted in an average increase of 60 cents on grocery bills, amounting to over $30 annually.

Effective July 1, the tax will be removed from the affected products, providing relief to consumers.
