Air India's CEO and managing director, Campbell Wilson, stated that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed in Ahmedabad was properly maintained. The last major check was done in June 2023, with the next one scheduled for December 2025.
Wilson mentioned that the right engine was overhauled in March 2025, and the left engine was inspected in April 2025. Both the aircraft and engines were regularly monitored and showed no issues before the flight.
The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical hostel complex in Ahmedabad with 242 people on board. The tragic incident resulted in the loss of 270 lives, including passengers, crew members, and individuals on the ground.
In response to the crash, Air India is enhancing pre-flight safety checks on its Boeing 787 and 777 fleet. This decision has led to a reduction of around 15% in international wide-body flights starting June 20 until at least mid-July to ensure more backup aircraft are available to handle any unforeseen issues.
Wilson expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the schedule changes and emphasized the importance of safety measures in the aviation sector. The airline is awaiting the official investigation report to determine the cause of the tragic incident.
