A British-flagged luxury superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch and six others, has been lifted out of the water as salvage recovery crews completed the operation to bring it ashore for further investigation.

A luxury superyacht that tragically sank off the coast of Sicily last year, resulting in the loss of U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch and six others, has been successfully lifted from the water by salvage recovery crews. The vessel, known as the Bayesian, was brought ashore for further investigation after a complex operation in Porticello, Italy.

The 56-meter (184-foot) superyacht, with its white top and blue hull covered in algae and mud, was visibly raised out of the sea by a yellow floating crane barge. TMC Maritime, the company overseeing the recovery, confirmed the successful and safe retrieval of the vessel following a delicate lifting procedure.

The hull of the Bayesian will be held in an elevated position to allow salvage experts to conduct thorough checks and preparations before it is transported to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese. Once in the port, the superyacht will be made available for investigators to determine the cause of the tragic sinking.

The Bayesian sank near Palermo during a storm on August 19, while Lynch was onboard with friends celebrating his acquittal on fraud charges in the U.S. The tragic incident claimed the lives of Lynch, his daughter, and five others, while fifteen people survived, including the captain and crew members.

Italian authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the sinking of the superyacht. Over the past three days, the vessel was slowly raised from the seabed 50 meters (165 feet) below the surface, allowing the necessary lifting equipment to be secured under the keel.

Steel lifting straps were used to upright the hull and form part of a steel wire lifting system to raise the vessel out of the water. As the superyacht was lifted, seawater was pumped out of the hull, revealing the extent of the damage.

The Bayesian is currently missing its 72-meter (236-foot) mast, which had to be detached and left on the seabed for future removal. British investigators cited extreme wind conditions as the cause of the vessel's overturning, leading to its tragic sinking.

According to an interim report released by British investigators, the crew of the Bayesian had sought shelter at the site of the sinking to avoid forecasted thunderstorms. However, wind speeds exceeding 70 knots (81 mph) violently knocked the vessel over to a 90-degree angle in less than 15 seconds, resulting in the tragic loss of lives.

Mike Lynch, who had previously sold his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, had been acquitted of fraud charges in the U.S. just two months before the fatal incident. The salvage and investigation of the Bayesian superyacht aim to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic sinking off the coast of Sicily.
