After the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, the identities of at least eight victims remain unknown as DNA samples have not matched yet. Families have been asked to provide samples from other relatives for testing.
Authorities have successfully matched DNA samples of 247 victims, with 232 bodies already handed over to families by Saturday. Medical superintendent Rakesh Joshi mentioned that bodies cannot be released until a match is confirmed.
The DNA matching process is complex and involves legal procedures, requiring meticulous attention and speed. In cases where no match is found, samples from other family members are requested for comparison.
Forensic Science University, local authorities, and various agencies are collaborating to expedite the identification process. Filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala's death was confirmed through DNA testing after he was reported missing following the crash.
The Air India flight AI-171 crashed moments after takeoff, resulting in 241 deaths on board and 29 on the ground. Due to the condition of some bodies, DNA tests are crucial for establishing victim identities.
Relatives bid farewell to crew members Deepak Pathak and Irfan Shaikh, whose bodies were identified through DNA testing. Pathak had served the airline for 11 years and received a solemn send-off in Maharashtra and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
