Splitgate 2 developer 1047 Games has recently experienced layoffs, with the studio's co-founders choosing not to take salaries in an effort to improve the game's performance.
Initially launched with a battle royale mode and a controversial $145 microtransaction bundle, Splitgate 2 garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with a peak concurrent player count significantly lower than its predecessor, Splitgate.
Despite attracting over 2.5 million players across consoles and PC, the game's reception was not as positive as expected. Co-founder Ian Proulx expressed surprise at the backlash, stating that it was unintentional.
Following the turbulent launch, 1047 Games announced a round of layoffs affecting a small group of staff members. Co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian have decided to forgo their salaries to focus on enhancing the game.
The studio's full statement on the matter expressed gratitude towards the departing team members and reiterated their commitment to delivering an exceptional gaming experience for players.
While specific details about the layoffs were not disclosed, several key staff members have announced their departures on social media. Splitgate 2 currently maintains a 24-hour peak concurrent player count of 10,059 on Steam.
Despite the challenges, Splitgate 2 received a 7/10 rating in IGN's review, acknowledging its improvements over the original game.
