Environment Canada has issued a warning for a "dangerously hot and humid" heat wave coming to Toronto, with temperatures potentially reaching their highest in two years.

The national weather agency predicts temperatures of 31 to 36 C starting tomorrow, with little relief overnight. The heat wave is expected to peak on Monday before a cold front arrives later in the week.

Mayor Olivia Chow announced the opening of over 500 cooling spaces across the city, including libraries, community centres, and seniors' homes. The Red Cross will also conduct door-to-door wellness checks for vulnerable residents and seniors.

Residents are advised to check on older adults and those at risk of heat illness. Symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Severe cases may involve confusion, unconsciousness, or inability to sweat.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and wear light clothing
  • Plan activities for cooler hours
  • Never leave people or pets in a parked car

The CAA recommends drivers prepare for extreme heat by ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained and carrying extra water. Electric vehicle owners should precondition their cars to preserve battery life.

This is a developing news story, stay tuned for more details...
