A 52-year-old man from southeastern Cambodia's Svay Rieng province has succumbed to H5N1 human avian influenza, marking the fifth human fatality from the virus in 2025.

The Ministry of Health announced in a press release that a laboratory test conducted by the National Institute of Public Health confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus in the man on June 20.

Health officials are currently investigating the origin of the infection and are monitoring individuals who may have come into contact with the victim to prevent a potential outbreak in the community.

As a precautionary measure, Tamiflu (oseltamivir), an antiviral medication to contain the spread of bird flu, has been distributed to those who had direct exposure to the patient.

With a total of six human cases of H5N1 reported in Cambodia this year, five of which have resulted in fatalities, the country remains vigilant in its efforts to combat the virus.
